Similar to Storm Claudia hit the northern region the night before, Manchester City blew the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement three goal triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This result marked consecutive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

United’s capability to balance league and European soccer with a thin team has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this fortitude. Regrettably for the visitors, they appeared weary from start to finish, the historic win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.

The hosts, in comparison, have no similar fitness issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to build for the United boss and his squad from the first whistle. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose potent offense controlled and tore United open with a excellent opening period display that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the contest. Former City player Park came nearest, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to produce a single shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after the opening fixtures.
